Anatomy of a Project...
"Easy Going Green"
Documents pertaining to collaborative project between ninth grade Earth/Environmental Science and Theatre Arts at Warren New Tech High School
Planning the Project
First comes planning, and that is the key. This project is laid out using a modification of the project planning form available online from the Buck Institute. A great website, with many resources available for free to registered users.

Project Rollout
For this particular project, I used two entry documents, because I wanted to model some expectations for student performance.
Why two documents?
The first is terrible. It's boring. It lacks expression. Kind of like some of my student presentations up until this point. I don't let this one play for long. I plant a student in the audience to complain vociferously. When s/he does, we enter into a discussion about the faults of the presentation. "But I'm afraid you'll laugh at me if I show expression," I protest. "No, we'll pay attention better!" they defend. And they do. After I show the second document, which also models the use of bright colors and simple animation, students are able to recall almost all of the important points of the entry document. It's not just another letter.
How will the work be assessed?
It's important to know ahead of time - and for students to know as well - how they will be graded on the project. Revisit the project rubric frequently. It's not necessary to review it all at once. When students are writing scripts, help them look at the script with the "written communication" section of the rubric in mind. This rubric includes five learning outcomes: Technology (Creating 2 public service announcements), Theatre Content (Vocal Expression), Critical Thinking (Creativity), Work Ethic (professionalism during presentation), and Written Communication (Script writing and proofreading).
I use the rubric to assess students. I have a simpler checklist for our panel of energy experts. I also require students in the audience to complete a checklist on other presentations, and we run a Critical Friends review of each project, using their notes.

Group Management
Group Contract Template - Group divides up the work, sets expectations, defines goals, assigns responsibilities.
Group Learning Log - Groups use this at the first of class to set their daily goals and at the end of each work day to assess each group member's performance. Promotes time on task.
